Coastal Seas 2020.
The project started earlier this year during the first lockdown.
Feeling uninspired and mentally drained I knew I needed to find something new to focus my attention on.
Peacehaven promenade is not so well known to outsiders, but for locals, in the area, it's a great place to run, walk, swim, scream, escape. So sea swimming was the most logical choice of living so close to the sea.
I would take my 35mm point and shoot film camera with me into the water in a transparent enclosure. While swimming I would take pictures, submerge the camera in the water and shoot the light through the waves the way I saw it.
What became a cathartic experience, full of emotion enabled a short period of escape. The images became these abstract visuals of colours with motion, reflections, refracting the light through the water, creating these interesting one-off artworks.
I’d rush home excited to hand-develop the film.I soon realised it was not just the sea but the area in general that for many was a space to escape.
